At Your Level, the Story Matters More Than the Title

If you’re a Senior Manager, coming from public, aiming for that VP-level role, or you’re already a VP aiming for the next step, the biggest separator during an interview process isn’t always technical skills. Yes, you’ve invested a lot in your subject matter expertise and yes, you’re good at it. But at this point in your career, your value proposition includes what you bring to the table around leadership & around execution: the outcomes you’ve owned; how you’ve tied your work to business decisions; the target operating models you’ve built or how you’ve modernized/systematized what you inherited.

The key in these conversations is establishing your scope and impact early. This isn’t about bragging; this is about helping the stakeholder quickly calibrate your scope, ownership, and results. Understand or draw out the remit of the role: what it’s actually accountable for; what accomplishments the the organization is trying to replicate and the strategy driving it. Then anchor your examples to what matters in that seat. That’s what creates clarity, builds confidence in both you and the stakeholder and keeps the conversation moving forward with purpose.

All the best.
